Living a vast ocean from my family and oldest friends, my hubby and I can be guilty of losing touch with friends and family. It is not something to be proud of and before long, 6 months becomes a year, become two, becomes three.
But what I’ve found is that friends and family who do love you will always welcome you back in their life although you may feel awkward reaching out after some time passes.
In the spirit of the holidays here’s some ideas when you feel it’s just been a bit too long since you spoke to your family
Hand written letter
I think of all this is the most genuine sentiment, a hand written letter giving an update on how things are and asking how they are. Maybe include some printed Instagram pics. People love to receive mail and the personal touch will be well received.
Gifts are always welcome, special occasion or not. Especially if you’ve moved to a foreign place, care packages with homemade or even bought specialties from your new home are a great way to show someone you’re missing them.
Holiday cards are great way to make contact. The holiday gives a great occasion to send a card and you could always include some info on how you’re doing.
Call or Skype
Maybe just pick up the phone or arrange a Skype? Sometimes you just can’t beat hearing someone’s voice.
Getting in touch no matter after how long is worth it. You may feel awkward to take the first step, but once you do, you’ll make that person’s day extra special by letting them know you are thinking of them.
