As we head into the second month of this new year it’s apparent that the more I read about productivity the more evident it is that multitasking isn’t the way to go for everyday life. Reading emails, whilst taking calls, IM’ing coworkers while working on that presentation isn’t going to get any of it done fast, in fact it’s going to get it done much much slower!
Having said all that I think there a certain tasks which can be coupled making use of what I’m calling dead time where honestly it just makes sense to do these 2 things at once, let me show you what I’m talking about…
Driving and Audiobooks/Podcasts
As far as I’m concerned driving or even commuting on a train or subway is dead time. Obviously if you’re driving you have to concentrate on that, and if you’re commuting it’s hardly the time to pull out the laptop and start on a work project. So use this time for audio learning. I love audio books, I’m wired that way and I take in information best through auditory learning. Or listen to podcasts, my 2 favorites are This is Your Life by Michael Hyatt and Peter Voogd’s Young Entrepreneur Lifestyle
Doing chores and audio books
Same idea but why not learn something while you’re folding that laundry?
Gym and Work
I got creative recently have started taking my my iPad to the gym. Although I have an older iPad which is perfect for the gym (no need to worry about scuffing that new iPad Pro!) it doesnt have wifi enabled. My workaround? Turn on a personal hotspot on my phone and connect the iPad to that. Instant internet at only the cost of the data used! Now you obviously can’t lift weights and work on your #sidehustle. But the best equipment I’ve found is an exercise bike. It’s stable, you’re sat down and there’s lot of pockets for your phone, water and iPad. I’m writing this very post on an exercise bike right now.
I hope you can see that there’s ways to maximize any dead time you might have in your day efficiently and either get something done, catch up on your favorite blogs or learn something new!
