It was 2010 when I first heard about the book Eat Pray Love and then later saw the movie. I loved both the book and the movie but one of my favorite parts is where Liz is in Italy having a gorgeous dinner in Rome and the dinner table conversation is that of summing up famous cities of the world in one word.
London = Stuffy
New York = Ambition or maybe Soot
Rome = SEX!
Then one of the diners asks Liz the question and she throws ideas onto the table before finally settling on “writer”.
Isn’t it funny how so many of us define our word by what we do, what we are to other people – wife, mother, daughter, sister. But I think the question of what is our word is a fascinating one, full of self-reflection and thought. How do we find our word?
It’s something that crosses my mind as I think it is a great step in the direction of finding our purpose. Honestly I don’t have the answer for what is my word despite having given the subject a lot of thought. In the interests of self-exploration here are some ideas:
Passion – I’m a passionate person, when something really piques my interest I become very excited and enthralled by it. I am also passionate about life believing it’s a gift and should be cherished. I also like this idea relating to the question that Greeks ask when a man dies “Did he live with passion?” which is mentioned in one of my favorite movies Serendipity.
Explorer: Shortly after graduating from uni I new my next move would be to travel. I had been on cruise ships and wanted nothing more than to take time off and work on one, and that’s exactly what I did. But when I got back to the UK after my sabbatical I could not settle back to the UK. Luckily I took a trip to Las Vegas, met my soul mate and didn’t need to settle. Having said that “explorer” is not just about exploring the world, it’s about exploring myself, exploring life with my hubby and exploring all of the amazing aspects of life.
So let me ask you again, what is your word?
